Internet search engine Yahoo! has three new advertising formats which the company claims will bring rich media advertising to mobile screens.
According to Yahoo! there is an increasing number of people who access the Internet using their mobile phones and this will continue to grow as the adoption of smartphones soars.
Jon-Thin Kee, sales director of Yahoo! Malaysia, said Yahoo! views mobile devices as its new creative canvas.
“Yahoo!’s new mobile advertising formats offer advertisers the opportunity to experiment with new digital canvases and to engage their target audiences through sophisticated mobile advertising solutions,” he said.
One of the formats that Yahoo! offers is the expandable banner, which stretches downwards and can cover nearly two thirds of an iPhone screen.
Another one is the click to video banner, which shows a video clip when a user taps on it. A video plays on the native video player and users are brought back to the website to resume their session at the end of the clip.
The last format is an adhesion banner, which remains fixed in place on the screen. Yahoo! said this ensures the ad does not get lost while a user is looking through content on the device.
But users can expand or hide the banner as they consume their web content.
Kee announced that Yahoo! is also keen on increasing its search share and feels very positive that this goal can be achieved. “In Malaysia, a high percentage of searches are still done via Yahoo!,” he said.
Its new search direct feature will be key in achieving this goal. Search direct suggests trending searches the moment a user mouses over the search bar. And when a user types in a query, search direct will suggest other topics related to that query.
Kee said this feature is still in beta for PC web searches and will be available soon for mobile devices.
